SA / School starting age

When does my child start school in South Australia?

For a typical government-school entry, the first year is called Reception. The birthday rule is a starting point, not an assessment of readiness.

The short answer

Reception: the usual entry rule

For Reception, children turning five before 1 May ordinarily start in Term 1; those turning five from 1 May to 31 October ordinarily enter in Term 3. Children turning five later normally enter the following year.

What about preschool?

The corresponding year-before-school preschool intakes use the same Term 1 and Term 3 structure at age four.

Can my child start later or earlier?

South Australia is not simply a calendar-year cutoff state. The timing of Reception entry affects progression and any apparent "wait a year" alternative. Do not treat a different term or year as an automatic option without school confirmation.

What should I do next?

Check the birthday against the applicable term intake and speak with the school or preschool about the available pathway and progression.

StartYear can help structure this decision with parent observations and optional input from an educator, but it cannot approve a deferral, exception or school placement. Eligibility is not the same as readiness.
